Balancing Work Life and Home Life
If you’re new to trucking, you might not have adjusted to balancing your home life with your work life. It’s difficult at first, but the key to creating a good work-life balance is by having a clear understanding of what your work demands of you, what your home demands of you and knowing what makes you happy in life.
Being a truck driver has a specific set of demands that may affect your time outside of work. You’ll be on the road for days and even weeks at a time, meaning you won’t get to see your family or friends as often as you’d like. So how can you achieve a balanced lifestyle if you are out on the road? Read below to get a handle on what you need to achieve a healthy work-life balance while living a trucking lifestyle.
Take Care of Your Body
You’re body is the tool that keeps your truck moving. Sitting in a single position all day takes a toll on the body just as working out all day does. You may not be gaining muscles, but driving a truck puts strain on your neck, lumbar spine and hamstrings. Try to do exercises and stretches when you have down time to avoid the tension. This will prevent a burnout and will keep you fit for the days at home when you’d rather not be sitting on the couch.
Eating Well
Fueling your body is just as important as stretching. Eating as well as you can while you’re out on the road will not only help your future health, but it can also improve your mood and stamina. When you’re home, plan and request meals that you love so you have something extra to look forward to after all those days of fast food and packaged food.
Work Hours
Your schedule can be inconsistent, but it helps to plan ahead as much as you can. Keep your family members informed so they can plan activities for the time you’re at home. It will give you something to look forward to while you’re logging the miles.
Home Life
Depending on your home life, there may be many components to being at home. You’ll want to spend time with your partner and children (if you have them). Make sure everyone knows what you can offer and what you would like to do with them when you’re back. If you need a full day without responsibilities, ask for it. Communication is key.
Social Life
You could have a large social life outside of your home that you might want to see as well. Make sure you prioritize them just like you would anyone else. Weekly activities may not be possible with the trucking lifestyle, but try to squeeze them in for a night of watching the game or going out for a drink. Stay updated with people in your life with your smartphone. Don’t let friendships fall away.
Enjoy Yourself
This is the most important thing to remember. Enjoying your life on the road and at home will make for a successful career and successful personal life. Listen to your favorite music, watch your favorite shows. Play with your kids, spend time with your spouse. Find the perfect combination to make you smile no matter where you are.
Truck driving is an exciting career. You get to explore the country while boosting America’s economy. Once you find your perfect work-life and home-life balance, there’s no doubt that you’re life will be everything you’ve wanted.
